since working on his first tattoo at the age of sixteen, jun cha has established his own studio in los angeles, expanding his practice into drawing, painting, and sculpting. informed by roman and grecian sculptures, as well as other renaissance iconography, his work focuses on a black-&-white and gray palette that characterizes all of his creations – whether on skin, paper, or marble. cha has established himself as a world-class tattoo artist, with bookings currently closed and set to reopen fall of 2022.

for ronin, his solo exhibition at hidari zingaro, cha brought to life the classical figures depicted in his tattoos and paintings through a series of sculptures created using historic carrara marble, under the tutelage of local masters in the apuan alps. ‘cha’s choice of material and form reflect not only his immense technical skill, but also an exploration of an ancient discipline that is deeply rooted within tradition and imagery dating back hundreds of years,’ notes a statement from the gallery. ‘with each art form representing a meditation on death and disassociation of ego, cha’s artistic practice pays homage to the warrior’s path; one of adversity and solitude. master of his craft, yet also a servant, jun cha continues to fulfill his calling to create through his constant learning and unlearning. hidari zingaro invites you to come witness ronin, where cha’s latest grandiose display transforms nakano broadway into a modern day cathedral.’
